Welcome to my week on 52 Quilters. Please pardon my tardiness. My name is Leah and I live a very disorganized life in the Chicago suburbs with my husband, two kids, two dogs and two cats. My house is filled to the brim with fur and fabric. I am employed full time in beautiful downtown Chicago and I try to sew as much as possibly can when not running kids around or trying to maintain the appearance of cleanliness around the house.
I learned to sew from my mother as kid in Western Massachusetts. Back then I mostly made pillows and aprons and other Girl Scout endorsed projects. In college I got my hands on her old Kenmore beast and started to make my own Halloween costumes. My sewing was not very skilled but no one cares about the accuracy of your seams when you are dressed like a dinosaur.
I started quilting in 2012. I dipped my toe in with a whole cloth tie quilt for my son and quickly moved on to a basic scrappy patchwork for my daughter.
I have been expanding my skills ever since and try to test myself every so often. I given away half of what I sew so even if something isn't perfect, the recipients do not seem to mind the gift.
I collect vintage sewing machines. I started with an old turquoise Kenmore in 2016 and somehow have managed to amass over 40 of them. Most are Singers but I have a few other Kenmores, Whites and even a few Europeans like Necchi, Elna and even a Bernina. I only use four of five of them but have big dreams of restoring and working with the rest as well.
I love quilting and the community around it. I hope to get over my fears and join a local guild next year.
